The simple answer is yes, probably. But having sung in choirs all my life, let me tell you why I think the answer should probably rather just be no way!
A choral conductor plays a crucial role in helping a choir to perform at its best. By setting tempos, providing insightful rehearsal techniques, and offering helpful feedback to individual singers, a choral conductor leads the group towards a musically expressive and powerful performance. A knowledgeable conductor ensures all parts of the group come together to create a unified and powerful performance.
The choral conductor contributes to the individual growth of the singers by stretching and challenging them to develop their musical capabilities. While singing in the shower might make you feel all skilled and talented, we as singers sometimes need guidance when it comes to using our voices correctly.
The conductor brings out the best in the choir’s sound, enabling a unified performance that reaches audiences and stimulates emotion. There is no better feeling than standing on a stage and being part of the magic happening between the audience, conductor and singers!
The conductor helps the singers interpret and perform the music, teaches performance etiquette, shapes the choir’s sound, and provides musicianship and leadership, setting the performance standard high. When we sing alone, we have carte blanche on how we tell the story, but when we sing in a group, we must all tell the same story. The conductor is the guy or gal that ensures we are all on the same page.
A choral conductor also serves as an inspirational leader who builds motivation while preserving the positive energy and camaraderie within the group. It all starts with the conductor! I have seen this so many times – conductors just bring people together. Setting the pace of the spirit of the choir. Show me a healthy choir, and I’ll show you a healthy community.
